How to Apply for CalFresh (SNAP) in California
- Check Eligibility
You may qualify if you:
- Live in California.
- Meet income limits (based on household size).
- Are a U.S. citizen or certain lawful non-citizen.
- Have less than $2,750 in resources (some exceptions apply).

- Prepare Required Documents
You’ll need:
- Proof of identity (driver’s license, state ID, etc.).
- Proof of income (pay stubs, tax returns, unemployment benefits).
- Proof of residency (utility bill, lease, etc.).
- Social Security Numbers for all applying household members.

You can apply in 3 main ways:

📞 By Phone
- Call your county social services office (find your county office here: County Office Locator)
🏢 In Person
- Visit your local county office and submit a paper application (Form CF 285).
- Interview
- After applying, you’ll get a phone or in-person interview with a county eligibility worker.
- They’ll review your application, documents, and situation.
- Get Your EBT Card
- If approved, you’ll receive a Golden State Advantage (EBT) card in the mail.
- Benefits are loaded monthly → you can use it like a debit card at grocery stores, farmers markets, and some online retailers (Amazon, Walmart, Instacart, etc.).
- Renew Every Year
- You must recertify annually and report changes in income, household, or expenses.
